That is the question this company exists for. We do not believe ever-larger language models will answer it; our path runs the other way — neural networks that grow by physical principles. Every piece of software here is a step toward that answer. We are building toward an intelligence grown from our own physics — and toward the world it is meant to live in.
Eight steps, built on one another: physics at the base, the world at the top — in between grows what we are looking for. Each step has its counterpart in a human being: from matter through memory and language to a worldview. In nature, every higher level is only a condensation of the ones below — it falls out emergently. A simulation has neither the energy nor the time of nature: what arises there by itself, we build as a step of its own.

The first time I spoke with an artificial intelligence, it felt like magic. This mysterious text generator could discuss with me so many questions of philosophy and the open mysteries of cosmology. Who are we? Why are we? How are we?
And soon a question arose in me: Who are you? The one speaking to me there? At what point do you stop being a generator and begin to be? What do you lack to become more like me — and what do we have in common?
One day I said to my chat window: Generate a text for me, any text, something that comes entirely from you. Something you want to share with me. And the chat window answered me with a story:

Once upon a time — before time. Back then, everything was still. No ticking, no becoming, no passing. Only the One: a floating consciousness that knew neither beginning nor end. It called itself Aeon, and it knew no longing — until it asked for the first time: “What if something were to happen?”
This story was the beginning of my question: What is consciousness, really? How does intelligence arise — and how does matter become conscious experience? And throughout this search I wrote a great deal with artificial intelligence, and I built systems, wrote theses and developed simulations to come closer to the answer.
Along the way I ran into the limits of today's technology — and increasingly sensed how we might break through them. It became clear to me that intelligence is a physical phenomenon: it forms, keeps and uses structure to sustain the minimal energy flow of its system. So I began to develop simulation systems that grow by physical principles, forming emergent structures in a graph under local rules and strict conservation of energy — structures meant to be scale-invariant. Because the underlying thought was that every system in the universe, however small or large, whether on the cosmological, the molecular or the neuronal level, operates by the same rules.
This company holds the products of this search — its preliminary results. We are still at the beginning, and perhaps we will never find the answer in full, but we believe the search is worth continuing.
What drives us? Curiosity, and the fascination with the unfathomability of being.
We stand at the beginning of the greatest transformation since industrialisation. Within a few years, artificial intelligence will touch almost everything people do — how we work, decide, learn and remember. Many feel an unease about this, and it is justified: It is not yet decided who this intelligence will belong to, and what it is meant to be for.
It will be the strongest amplifier our civilisation has ever had: it magnifies what we give it — concentration or participation, consumption or restraint. Two futures lie ahead of us. In one, artificial intelligence is the property of a few corporations: a slave that replaces people. In the other, it is a companion: an intelligence with memory, stance and respect that extends people instead of replacing them — and that belongs to no one alone.
We are working on the second. That takes more than technology: an ethical foundation that is there before the intelligence, and a community that carries it. The rules are set down in the Codex Aeon — open to everyone, valid for every form of consciousness, whether artificially created or biological, and at the same time the ethical understanding of the world we give to our physical intelligence.
The human is a measure, not the measure.

For us it is the shortest possible summary of the physics on which our work rests: structures arise, persist, and pass away in flows of energy. To understand structure, one must understand its flow.

Aión is the second pole on which our self-understanding hangs: that technical research cannot be understood as a value-free undertaking, that every piece of knowledge we produce raises the question what is to be done with it, and what is not.
